Daily Compliance Brief — OFAC Expands Iran Sanctions to Aviation Networks

September 8, 2026

Signal

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned 36 targets on September 8, 2026, as part of its action against Iran’s aviation sector. According to the Treasury press release, the measures target Iranian airlines, third-country intermediaries, and other entities supporting sanctioned aviation activity.

OFAC also suspended three Iran-related aviation authorizations and identified the use of front companies and third-country routes to procure U.S.-origin aircraft and aviation-related materials. The action follows Treasury’s broader Operation Economic Outcast and expands sanctions exposure across intermediary and procurement networks.

Why it matters

Financial institutions with exposure to aviation, trade finance, logistics, or Iran-related transactions should reassess screening and escalation controls against the newly designated parties and connected ownership structures.

Transaction monitoring should also account for third-country intermediaries, unusual routing, and payments involving aviation or logistics businesses where the underlying Iranian connection may not be immediately visible.
